The Disaster of Sewing with Coffee!

I can’t believe what I just did! I’m working on Kirk’s Magic Messenger, the one that’s been kicking my butt all summer, because this lovely man wants a messenger bag that converts into a backpack. Anyway I have all my stuff laid out, I’ve begun working on the straps, set my coffee on my night stand next to my computer and decide I need to upload some pictures before I go any further. Something told me not too…

Of course I didn’t listen.

I go and grab my camera, and go to take my computer off of the night stand and WHACK! My computer cord completely takes out my coffee mug and an entire cup of coffee baptizes my entire workspace! Including my sewing machine and Kirk’s straps for his bag!

In my shock, a part of me wanted to leave everything the way it was so I could document it all on camera, but my small logical side knew how stupid that would be considering my sewing machine is digital and it was all over the wood, floor, my fabric, and of course my beautiful (and I’m sure expensive) bedspread cover.

So after being literally frozen for about 30 seconds I sprint to the kitchen to get paper towels to clean the mess.

The good news is that his Gore-tex fabric really IS water and coffee proof =) Although, the cotton shirt I’m using did absorb it pretty well and I’m sure his bag will now smell like coffee (fat free hazelnut coffee anyway =)

At this point I don’t think the damage will be TOO bad. I’m just hoping it didn’t do major damage to my sewing machine, because if that’s the case I will definitely be out of commission for the summer until I get back on the main land in September and that would be NO BUENO!

So here’s to no liquids near my workspace!

Here are some photo’s I took of the after math.

This is what it looked like before I dumped the whole cup onto the floor.  Note how the black cord is behind the cup, so when I lifted the computer…Done.

This one was after I sucked it all up with paper towels, soaked the duvet cover in Oxy stain remover and wiped down the sewing machine. *sigh*

I blame this on my mom.  I get my clumsiness from her!

Zandra’s Custom Jumbo Boxer Tote!

I actually had two meetings with Zandra about her tote bag!  The first time we also met with Ashley and Imee, and just spoke about what she wanted because she didn’t have any fabric/clothes picked out yet.  The second time we hashed out all the details and of course went to “Sweet Sundae’s” to build our own frozen yogurts YUMMMM!!!

Zandra is a busy girl.  She goes to grad school, works at a restaurant, does an internship at a hospital, and still manages to keep it all together somehow!  With that said she needed a  large sturdy bag to tote around all of her life in.  Work clothes, School books, laptop, pens etc…

She brought some items for me to see and choose from and I was very impressed at how well everything matched.  She brought over 2 pairs of cargo pants, her dad’s boxers (that he never wore! =) jean shorts, and sweat pant shorts, the last two of which I didn’t need.

The Front and Back face are made from the boxers, and the lining, as well as the side panels, and laptop divider are each constructed out of 2 pairs of cargo pants.

Because cargo pants are made with so many pockets to begin with I was pretty much off the hook in the pocket making area, but it did make for some interesting episodes while in the cutting process!  For the side panels I cut right over the back and front pockets on the pants so that each panel would have it’s own unique pocket.

For the inside pocket I used two back pockets, and reconstructed them into one long pen and pencil pocket.

The inside divider is filled with a 3/8″ foam piece to protect her laptop.

And the straps have been majorly reinforced!  =)

This tote turned out better than I originally thought and all the colors look wonderful together.  I hope it’s as functional for Zandra as she needs and that she gets a ton of use out of it!  It’s built to last =)

Can’t wait to see it filled with all her goodies!  Enjoy it Zandra!  I had a great time making it here on the Vineyard!

Martha’s Vineyard

I have officially relocated for the summer!  Which is the reason I haven’t updated you on my latest sewing endeavors.  I left on July 7th and will be returning to California September 14th.

But I won’t stop sewing!  1 of my 5 bags were clothes, and the other 4 were filled with sewing supplies and things I would need for the 3 bags I have to work on this summer.

Anyhow, I set up my new “workstation” in the family’s house that I’m working for, and while the space isn’t the most desirable, as I am sewing sitting on a wood floor, although beautiful, really gives me a sore bum!  Don’t feel bad for me, check out my incredible view!

This island is amazing, this house is amazing and what else it amazing is that in 4 days here I’ve gotten as much accomplished working full time as I would’ve at home with 3 full days to myself.  I’ll probably get tired, but I’m motivated when I look out these windows.

I have a feeling this is going to be an awesome summer!

I hope you have a summer worth remembering also!

Enjoy!

Leslie’s Honeymoon Tote!

I was so excited when I got the order for this tote.  Leslie’s daughter is getting married mid July and wanted to custom tote for her daughter to take on her honeymoon to hawaii, using her wedding colors, aqua and red.  After some e-mail communication to find out exactly what she wanted and sending me a wedding invitation so I could get an idea of the theme I got started.

She told me that she wanted it to look a bit bridal, but not to “blingy” as her daughter isn’t into over the top bling, and to include an inside zipper pocket for her keys and money.  She also wanted to use a mix of upcycled clothing and new fabric.

The outside of the bag  is made from a Men’s White Button up shirt.  I thought it would be appropriate to use white to go along with the wedding theme and to use a men’s shirt to represent the groom.

The aqua lining and pockets are from store bought fabric.  Since she wanted a mix of new and used fabric I decided to buy the aqua at the fabric store because that is a tough color to match and I wanted to make sure that I got it to match just right.

The silky red polka dot fabric is from the same pajama’s that I used on Imee’s custom tote.  They matched perfectly, the texture was just right for a bridal tote and I had just enough left over to use to accent this tote with.

For the embroidery on the front I chose to do a flower with the date in red and aqua.  I’d never used the embroidery feature on my machine before but luckily I got to do a practice round when Mama Jackie came over to help me.  After seeing the embroidery done during my practice round I decided to use 3 different color reds to add some depth to the flower, and the end result was stunning.

Overall this tote have me a lot of new challenges and gave me a great sense of pride when I finished and held the finished product =)

Leslie told me that her daughter loves the tote!  And thought it was cool how there were buttons down the side =)  Another happy customer!  YES!!  =)
