Almost back in action =)

Life hasn’t slowed down quite yet and it’s about to get a little crazier! I’m back in California and have found a car, job and a am working on moving into a new place!

With all the crazyness I left half of my sewing machine and sewing supplies on the east coast and they just arrived in the mail so I can actually set up shop once again and get to work! I have a few orders that I must complete soon and adjustments need to be made with KP’s Magic Messenger…still!

Hopefully I find a place with some sewing space soon and can indulge you all with beautiful pictures again soon =) I probably miss them as much as you do =)

Where I’ve Been Hiding!

Oh man! Lord knows I never meant to be away from punKyj for this long!
.
So since my last post in August here’s what I’ve been doing…in no particular order
Notice that there are no photos of my amazing creations, or sob stories about my sewing mishaps.  It’s because I have barely touched my punKyj life since I finished KP’s Magic Messenger.  And because I’ve created another disaster in the meantime without sewing!
.
When I went to the WWE wrestling match I brought my Sanctify bag with me (as I always do) and dropped it into some nasty wrestling juice under my seat.  It was sopping wet!  So I went home with the intention of washing it on gentle, hang drying it, or drying it on delicate.  Since I’ve only wash tested one other of my bags.
.
Unfortunately it was washed in the same load as a super heavy RUG!  And thrown into the drying on high, not once but TWICE, with the huge and heavy rug!
.
The good news is that my bag stayed strong and in one piece.  The bad news is that the color is completely faded and it’s semi mis-shapen  and some of the interfacing on the inside of the bag clumped together, so it feels like there are little balls inside of the flap!  *sigh*  At least I know my bags are sturdy…
.
Anyway, I’ve been desperately dreaming about getting back into the groove and have even started my Auntie Annie’s new purse (which is going to be pretty sweet) but haven’t continued to work on it, because not only do I need more supplies, but I’ve been working for 11 days straight and have been moving all over the east coast for the past 3 weeks =/
.
So look forward to some new photos come the end of September and I’ll keep doing faulty experiments on my
bag so that I can make yours better! =)

Photoshoot in Martha’s Vineyard!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

If you tell me these aren’t the sweetest girls you’ve ever seen and I’ll step on your foot and break your toe!  These girls are amazing and will someday leave a huge mark on this world!

But for now they are care free, FUN, and enjoying the little things, and even littler things that can fit in their new bags =)

I’m so glad you girls love your bags as much as I loved making them!  It makes me happy to see other people’s joy while carrying them =)

And just a heads up.  I also gave photoshop my best attempt for these pictures.  I may have “over photoshopped” a few but I think they still look good for the most part!  It’s all a learning process =)

Enjoy!

The Night I became a Sewing Machine Surgeon

PRE-WARNING!  This post is REALLY LONG!  Sorry in advance =/

This night was possibly the worst sewing night I’ve ever had.  Mainly because I never actually got to SEW!  I was working like a dog on Kirk’s (aka…KP) Magic Messenger Bag and had already had as many mishaps as I could bare.  Which is true, because I couldn’t bare this one and by the end of the night I was curled up under my covers, in the fetal position with tears in my eyes!  I’d already had a Coffee Disaster a couple of days before and was still cleaning up the mess from that.

But come to find out the clean up wasn’t over yet.

I was in the final stages of KP’s bag where I just had to sew the outside pieces together and top stitch the edges.  A moment I had waited for for months and I couldn’t believe I was finally there.  So I began to sew and everything seemed to be running smoothly, even though minor coffee had stains speckled the machine.

Then it JAMS!  Competely stops and won’t sew another inch.

Thread has gotten jammed before and although frusterating, it’s fixable.

So I did my usual diagnosis and took my seam ripper to cut the thread and dig out whatever was stuck.  I pulled out some of the knotted bobbin underneath the needle, re-threaded, and started to sew again.

This time it didn’t even make it 1 inch…

UGH I already started getting frusterated.  So I went through the process again… 8 minutes later I try to sew again…

1 inch…JAMMED!

8 minutes later…

1 inch…JAMMED!

I swear it did this about 5 times before I got really serious.  By now it’d been close to an hour and I decided that maybe it was due to some coffee getting inside and drying and it was sticking to something.  So I pulled out some paper towels, Q-tips and water and begin fine cleaning the entire machine, taking pieces off and everything.

Then I decide to clean underneath the needle where the bobbin is (Which is what you see in the pictures above.)  So I referred to my manual to figure out how to take this thing apart without disintegrating  it.  I opened it with the screw driver and I imagine my face looked like someone just asked me to operate on someones brain…What the heck is all this stuff!

So naturally I just start picking at all the things in there, cleaning it, taking it apart and being naively reckless.  I ended up pulling out so much thread I could have wound an entire spool with what was under there and I thought FOR SURE that was why the machine kept Jamming, there was so much junk (including the stickyness of the coffee) down in there.

I did a really good job cleaning and remember even thinking about how my boyfriend would be proud of my focus, resourcefulness, and diligence.  Which made me smile inside.

That smile soon faded when I put it back together, re-threaded it…

1 inch…JAMMED!

UGHAHAIDHGHIH!!  WHY!

SO I took everything apart again and busted out my computer, in hopes that Google would come to the rescue.  I read every thread on fixing jammed machines, tried every SINGLE piece of advice in every column.  I even spent $11 to buy some new bobbin’s because someone mentioned that that might be the problem (let me tell you that I could’ve gotten those same bobbins back in California at my local fabric store for $3 but I’m in Martha’s Vineyard and had to get them shipped.  BOO!)

So that took me forever and a day and I was real excited!  Because now I’d really done everything and followed the rules so it had to work!

1 inch…JAMMED!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooo!

Now I’m seething with anger and frusteration as I go BACK on the internet to find anything I couldn’t find before.

I take everything apart AGAIN and redo everything I just did.

By the time I finish that round it was almost 3 hours from when I started and I was so emotionally exhausted by my self inflicted inner tantrums that I was too nervous to even try to see if it worked.  I really couldn’t handle sewing another inch and having it be jammed again after all that work.

Instead I sat on the edge of my bed to stare at my mess and I tell myself I’d feel better if I just cried.  So I called KP and left him the saddest voicemail I could possibly muster and whine about how my sewing machine is broken and I have nobody to fix it out here *sniff*sniff* call me.  Bye.

I curl up in my fetal position tell God he must not care about me very much if he’s just gonna let my sewing machine break, and sulk myself to sleep…

(I can be very melodramatic at times…)

The next day I knew I had to brave it once again.  So I try my last remaining prescription and change the needle…

Thread the machine…

WHA LA!

It WORKED!

Then I thanked God for Loving me enough to fix my machine while I was sleeping and made a mental note to pat my angels on the back when I get to heaven.

Anyhow.  It was a very…difficult night for me.  But somehow I made it out on the other side!

YAY!

Now the bag is finally done and I can’t wait to tell you if he likes it or not!

(And wow if you made it this far into the post, I thank you!  This was a VERY long winded description of what happened. You must be a TRUE punKyj fan =)

Kirk’s Custom Magic Messenger Bag DONE!

Where do I begin with this one?…

Back in September 10 months ago, practically day 1 of “punKyj,”  KP politely asked me to make him a *Gore-tex Messenger Bag that converted into a backpack.  And I politely told him I wasn’t a magician so he’d have to be more practical…

I put it off for as long as I could because for 1:  Gore-tex is not plentiful like cotton.  They don’t sell it at the local fabric store.  And I found it for sale on one website on the entire internet.  Seriously.  Gore-tex is something that North Face uses…not me.

2.  I didn’t know how the heck I could possibly make a messenger bag turn into a backpack and still be functional and not look TOTALLY weird!

3.  Well KP is very particular about his things and does not like to go outside looking like a fool.  So I knew if I messed it up he’d just be disappointed, not wear it, and I’d have lost a week/month of my life for no reason.

Eventually he got tired of my avoidance techniques and I had to get the ball rolling.

He had a good idea for what he wanted it to look like, with the backpack strap padding laying against the side panel of the bag so when they were not in use they would lay flush with the bag and go unnoticed for the most part.  And he also wanted a special place for the extra straps to go so that they weren’t just hanging around.

I drew up his idea and planned out all the pieces I’d need and got to work.

I ordered his Gore-tex fabric in mid-June and picked out 2 of his shirts to make the lining and laptop divider, and have taken my sweet time completing this project because making a mistake was not an option.

I’m so glad I took my time because this bag is beautiful now!

Complete with back pocket with a separate cell phone pocket, a pen and pencil pocket on the inside front face.  And a pocket on the inside lining as well as a padded and secured laptop divider.  There’s nothing more he could really need!  Unless of course he wants his initials embroidered on the flap…which isn’t a bad idea…

Anyway!  More than ever I want him to love this bag!  Half my heart is in there =)

I feel so accomplished.  I love getting new challenges and accomplishing them.  If you have any great idea’s throw them at me and see if you can stump me.  I dare you!

More info on GORE-TEX

*The origin of waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX® outerwear, footwear, and gloves starts with five little letters: ePTFE. ePTFE, or expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, was created by Bob Gore in 1969 when he rapidly stretched PTFE under certain conditions. The result was an incredibly strong, microporous material with an amazing list of characteristics including low water adsorption and good weathering properties. By 1978, GORE-TEX® fabric was introduced and the world met the first truly waterproof, breathable outerwear. Thanks to our commitment to unending innovation and creativity, waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX® products have continued to improve and evolve to keep in step with the changing needs of our customers. The basic hallmarks that make our outerwear, footwear, and gloves the choice of serious professionals and casual outdoor enthusiasts alike remain, however:
The GORE-TEX® membrane: The secret of GORE-TEX® outerwear — which is both completely waterproof and completely breathable at the same time — lies within its revolutionary bi-component membrane. The membrane contains over 9 billion microscopic pores which are approximately 20,000 times smaller than a drop of water, but 700 times bigger than a molecule of moisture vapor. So while water in its liquid form cannot penetrate the GORE-TEX® membrane, as moisture vapor it can easily escape.
Waterproof, windproof and breathable: The patented GORE-TEX® membrane makes garments 100% waterproof, windproof and breathable so that you stay dry and comfortable under any conditions.
Durable: Waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX® outerwear is made of the very toughest fabrics and is thoroughly tested to guarantee performance even after serious wear and tear. Easy care: Just because it’s high tech doesn’t mean it has to be high maintenance. GORE-TEX® fabric is extremely easy to take care of and won’t lose its effectiveness even after repeated washing.
Guaranteed to Keep You Dry® Promise: Perhaps the most important aspect of breathable, waterproof GORE-TEX® outerwear. We firmly believe in our outerwear and back it up with a promise: No liquid from the outside will get to you on the inside. This includes moisture from the wet grass you’re kneeling in to the sudden squall you get caught in. We take this guarantee seriously. If you are not completely satisfied with the waterproofness, windproofness, or breathability of your GORE-TEX® product, then we will repair it, replace it, or refund your purchase price.
Born of innovation, creativity and a love of discovery, waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX® outerwear encourages you to get out there and get more out of the outdoors. And remember, if it doesn’t say “GORE-TEX®”, it’s not.

In Progress-KP’s Magic Messenger

AKA…the bag that kicked my butt and made me cry!

I’m almost done with it, but since it’s taken me about 10 months to make this particular bag I thought you ought to see the process.

The Disaster of Sewing with Coffee!

I can’t believe what I just did! I’m working on Kirk’s Magic Messenger, the one that’s been kicking my butt all summer, because this lovely man wants a messenger bag that converts into a backpack. Anyway I have all my stuff laid out, I’ve begun working on the straps, set my coffee on my night stand next to my computer and decide I need to upload some pictures before I go any further. Something told me not too…

Of course I didn’t listen.

I go and grab my camera, and go to take my computer off of the night stand and WHACK! My computer cord completely takes out my coffee mug and an entire cup of coffee baptizes my entire workspace! Including my sewing machine and Kirk’s straps for his bag!

In my shock, a part of me wanted to leave everything the way it was so I could document it all on camera, but my small logical side knew how stupid that would be considering my sewing machine is digital and it was all over the wood, floor, my fabric, and of course my beautiful (and I’m sure expensive) bedspread cover.

So after being literally frozen for about 30 seconds I sprint to the kitchen to get paper towels to clean the mess.

The good news is that his Gore-tex fabric really IS water and coffee proof =) Although, the cotton shirt I’m using did absorb it pretty well and I’m sure his bag will now smell like coffee (fat free hazelnut coffee anyway =)

At this point I don’t think the damage will be TOO bad. I’m just hoping it didn’t do major damage to my sewing machine, because if that’s the case I will definitely be out of commission for the summer until I get back on the main land in September and that would be NO BUENO!

So here’s to no liquids near my workspace!

Here are some photo’s I took of the after math.

This is what it looked like before I dumped the whole cup onto the floor.  Note how the black cord is behind the cup, so when I lifted the computer…Done.

This one was after I sucked it all up with paper towels, soaked the duvet cover in Oxy stain remover and wiped down the sewing machine. *sigh*

I blame this on my mom.  I get my clumsiness from her!
